I often find myself having to sit on my suitcase in order to zip it up while packing for vacation. If you’re anything like me, you know this struggle all too well.
While everyone and their mother tells you to pack light for trips and “fit everything into a carry-on,” it’s just not always possible.
Between wanting to make sure I have enough outfits (you know, in case I have to go to a very fancy event) to also ensuring I have plenty of shoes, packing isn’t an easy feat.
However, there are ways it can be done. In fact, by following just a few easy tips, you can pack light while also bringing enough outfit options.
Dressing in leggings and an oversized sweatshirt may be more comfortable for a plane ride, but it’s not going to help your packing situation.
In order to create space in your suitcase, wear your heaviest/thickest clothing while traveling. Yes, it may be a little uncomfortable, but trust us when we say it’ll make a difference.
For example, if you’re really wanting to bring a leather jacket, wear it on the plane. If you’re planning to bring a couple of pairs of jeans, wear one of them on the plane.
The best thing you can do for yourself is to bring a piece of clothing that will work for three different outfits.
That means, ditch the patterned skirt that can only be worn once or the shoes that will only work with one specific outfit. Instead, pick a top that you can wear with jeans, a skirt, and shorts.
Pack a pair of shoes that work for your “day at the beach” outfit, your “day of shopping” outfit, and even your “night out to dinner” outfit.
If it can’t be worn more than three times during your trip, it’s got to go.
Never underestimate the power of a dress, romper, or jumpsuit — aka an outfit that only requires one piece of clothing.
If you’re really wanting to pack light, try to wear as many one-piece outfits as possible. This will free up space in your suitcase (since you won’t be stuffing it with pants and tops), but it’ll also mean you’ll look super cute and stylish.
We know it’s hard to think about this while packing, but stores do exist around the world.
Whether you’re planning a trip to Florida or to Rome, Italy, if you desperately need something while you’re on vacation, the odds are high you can go out and buy and buy an outfit.
Don’t stress about having the perfect outfit should you be invited to a black-tie gala or a surprise wedding.
Stick to the basics and just know that if something comes up, you’ll more than likely be able to buy what you’re looking for.
